Wartburg - Berkemeier Memory Care Facility
Mount Vernon, NY
Wartburg commissioned KDA Architects to develop a plan that included the demolition of an existing building (Berkemeier Auditorium) and the construction of a new 5-story structure of approximately 47,000 square feet. The contemporary design respects the unique character of the site, campus architecture and neighboring buildings. Additionally, consideration for sustainability, large windows, enhanced views, and the beneficial effects of natural light propelled the design process to ensure a rich, healing living environment.
The facility features four households of 12 private and semi-private memory care units each, totaling 48 in all. Households are dispersed across the four upper levels, each offering gracious community spaces for dining and gathering. The main floor common areas include the main lobby, gallery, offices, flex meeting space and support services. The secure memory garden faces the campus green space that is the heart of the community.
