The Essex and Sussex

The Essex and Sussex

Spring Lake, New Jersey - The Essex & Sussex Hotel opened in 1914 in the prestigious community of Spring Lake, New Jersey as a haven for the wealthy of New York and Philadelphia. Since its heyday in the pre-depression years, the Essex & Sussex has gone through a tough history of negligent owners, fire, disrepair and abandonment. KDA Architects had the pleasure of rehabilitating this historic structure into the premier senior living facility along the Atlantic coastline.
Essex and Sussex Dining Alcove before and after
The transformation of the Essex & Sussex Hotel into an up-scale Independent Living Residence for the “baby boomers” 55 and older, is a premier example of exceptional renovation, preservation and adaptive reuse of an irreplaceable historic building. It is the first major rehabilitation project completed in New Jersey using the newly adopted New Jersey Rehabilitation Code. A detailed analysis of the existing site and building was conducted using digital photography, as-built drawings and research into the original construction of the Essex & Sussex at the turn of the century. Samples of the existing materials were cataloged so matches could be accomplished wherever possible.
